An Invitation to Participate in this year's SSQ4
Are you up for an interfaith spiritual quest? Whether you’re an 8th – 12th grader from a particular religious tradition—or no faith at all—the 2013-2014 Sacred Sites Quest 4 could be for you!
The Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance at Rice, which sponsors the SSQ, is accepting applications. Please click on the SSQ4 Application link in the drop-down menu on the left side of our website to access the application form online.
All applications are due via the Boniuk Institute website by 3:30 p.m. on Monday, September 23rd, 2013. Earlier application is encouraged. Accepted applicants will be notified of their acceptance by Wednesday, September 25th. Those for whom there isn’t room will be placed on a waiting list. Preference will be given to the earliest applications received.
The quest will begin on Saturday morning September 28th. It will take place during two- to three-hour sessions mostly—but not exclusively—on weekend days. The quest will formally conclude on Saturday afternoon March 8th, 2014.
Tuition for the SSQ program is $300, payable by check when accepted applicants complete their Registration form (i.e. by the Monday, September 23rd deadline, at the latest). Tuitions defray only a portion of the SSQ expenses (mostly transportation, equipment access and materials) per student. Half- or full-scholarship aid is available for those with financial need; simply indicate such a request when you apply.
The first half of the quest features visits to a series of selected sacred sites throughout greater Houston. Most of these visits will entail observing worship services in process. The final half of the quest will feature a collaborative capstone art and service project through which the SSQ’ers will produce a tangible creative legacy together for a dedicated Prayer Garden in Houston.
Participants will forge close relationships with a new network of friends from various faith traditions—or no faith at all. They’ll also increase their religious—and interfaith—literacy and learn all sorts of new things and skills during SSQ sessions. Finally, they’ll produce a capstone art and service project at the end of the process that will serve as their lasting creative legacy. Past participants report learning many new things and having lots of fun, in the process.
Space in the Sacred Sites Quest is limited. So don’t delay: apply today if you’re interested.
It’s a serious, significant commitment to make. So it certainly isn’t for everyone. But if you know it’s for you, then please act soon to let us know of your interest!
